چکیده

Background: Whether the serum iron level in Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients was higher than those in health controls was not consistent in the reported studies. Thus, we conducted a meta-analysis to summarize the evidence from observational studies between them. Methods: Pertinent studies were identified by a search in PubMed and Web of Knowledge up to July 2015. Standardized mean difference (SMD) was performed to combine the results. Random-effect model was used. Publication bias was estimated using Egger’s regression asymmetry test. Results: In our study, ten articles involving 591 PD cases and 917 health controls were included in the analysis. Our pooled results suggested that PD patients had a significantly higher serum iron levels compared with those in health controls [summary SMD = 0.28, 95% CI = 0.16, 0.39, P<0.001]. The associations were also significant both in Europe [SMD = 0.60, 95% CI = 0.37, 0.83] and in Asia population [SMD = 0.48, 95% CI = 0.32, 0.65]. No publication bias was found. Conclusions: The current study suggested that serum iron level in PD patients was significantly higher than those in health controls, both in Europe and Asia populations.

Serum Iron Levels and the Risk of Parkinson Disease: A Mendelian Randomization Study

BACKGROUND Although levels of iron are known to be increased in the brains of patients with Parkinson disease (PD), epidemiological evidence on a possible effect of iron blood levels on PD risk is inconclusive, with effects reported in opposite directions. Epidemiological studies suffer from problems of confounding and reverse causation, and mendelian randomization (MR) represents an alternativ...

Serum Copper, Zinc, and Iron Levels in Patients with Alzheimer's Disease: A Meta-Analysis of Case-Control Studies

Background: Many publications have investigated the association between metal ions and the risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD), but the results were ambiguous. Aims: The objective of this study was to assess the association between the serum levels of metals (copper/zinc/iron) and the risk of AD via meta-analysis of case-control studies. Methods: We screened literatures published after 1978 in the...

A systematic review and meta-analysis on the association of serum and tumor tissue iron and risk of breast cancer

Background: Some studies have investigated the effects of iron on breast carcinogenesis and reported different findings about the association between Fe and breast cancer risk. This study was conducted to estimate this effect using meta-analysis method. Methods: A total of 20 articles published between 1984 and 2017 worldwide were selected through searching PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Scien...

The Relationship between Serum Vitamin D Levels and Risk of Abdominal Obesity: A Systematic Review and Dose-Response Meta-Analysis of Epidemiologic Studies

Background: Although the relation of serum vitamin D levels with abdominal obesity has been investigated by previous observational studies, the results are inconsistent. In the current study, a dose-response meta-analysis was conducted on epidemiologic studies that evaluated this association in adults. Methods: We performed a systematic search of all published articles, up to May 2020, in five...
